OAI-SearchBot

Definition

OAI-SearchBot is OpenAI's crawler for surfacing websites in ChatGPT's search features. OpenAI says sites that opt out of it are not shown in ChatGPT search answers, though they can still appear as navigational links.

What it means

OAI-SearchBot is separate from GPTBot, OpenAI's training crawler, and from ChatGPT-User, which fetches pages on a user's request. Allowing OAI-SearchBot is the robots.txt signal that a site's pages may be shown and cited in ChatGPT search answers.

OpenAI says robots.txt changes can take about 24 hours to be reflected. CDN or firewall rules that block the bot have the same practical effect as a disallow, even when robots.txt allows it.

Why it matters

For B2B brands that want to be cited when buyers research in ChatGPT, OAI-SearchBot is the access that matters most. It is often blocked by accident, together with GPTBot, by teams that meant only to opt out of training.

Example

A cybersecurity vendor wants its research reports cited in ChatGPT answers but kept out of model training. Its robots.txt disallows GPTBot and allows OAI-SearchBot, and its CDN bot rules are updated so the search crawler is not challenged.

Common misunderstandings

  • Allowing OAI-SearchBot does not guarantee a citation or a recommendation; it only makes pages eligible.
  • Blocking OAI-SearchBot is not a training opt-out; GPTBot is the training control.
  • A blocked site can still appear as a navigational link, so its absence from cited sources is easy to miss.
