ChatGPT Ads for B2B SaaS: What You Can Buy, Who Sees It, and What It Does Not Change

ChatGPT ads for B2B SaaS: who sees them (not Business or Enterprise users), how CPC bidding works, what a first test costs and why ads don't change answers.

Short answer

Should a B2B SaaS company buy ChatGPT ads?

Test them if your buyers are founders, freelancers or small teams who use ChatGPT on a free plan. Be careful if you sell to larger companies: OpenAI does not show ads to Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise or Edu accounts, so buyers who use ChatGPT through a paid work plan never see them. Ads are bought per click or per impression, OpenAI suggests a $3–$5 starting bid per click, and they do not change what ChatGPT recommends in the answer above them.

How ChatGPT ads work

ChatGPT advertising in eleven facts, from OpenAI's own pages

Where ads appearBelow a ChatGPT response, as one labeled ad unit. OpenAI is also testing a multi-image ad shown while an image is being generated.
Who can see themSigned-in users on the Free and Go plans, in the regions where ads are being tested, and logged-out users, who see only ads suitable for all audiences.
Who never sees themPlus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts, accounts identified as under 18, and Temporary Chats.
Effect on answersNone, according to OpenAI: ads run on separate systems and advertisers cannot shape, rank or alter ChatGPT's responses.
How you payPer impression (maximum CPM bid) or per valid click (maximum CPC bid). Conversion-optimized campaigns still bill per click.
Suggested starting bidOpenAI recommends starting with a maximum bid of $3–$5 per click for CPC campaigns.
How ads are chosenA relevance-weighted, second-price auction. Relevance draws on the conversation, your landing page, title, copy and context hints.
TargetingContext hints at the ad-group level describe the conversations where your product is relevant. They are not exact-match keywords.
ReportingImpressions, clicks, spend, CTR, average CPC, average CPM and conversions. Advertisers never see chats or personal details.
Self-service accessAds Manager self-service is open to advertisers whose billed legal entity is in one of 89 listed countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada and Germany.
Off-limitsNo ads near personal health, mental health or political conversations, and no political advertising. Regulated categories such as health and financial services must meet extra eligibility rules.

Self-service availability is where advertisers can buy; where users see ads is a separate, gradual rollout that started in the United States on February 9, 2026. Check the sources below before you plan a budget.

The B2B catch

Your enterprise buyers are on the plans that never see ads.

A buyer who researches software in ChatGPT through their company's Business or Enterprise workspace sees answers with no ads at all. So does anyone on Plus or Pro. The people an ad can reach are on Free or Go, or logged out. That audience includes many founders, consultants and small-team buyers, so ChatGPT ads fit self-serve and SMB products better than sales-led enterprise software. For an enterprise product, the answer itself is the only placement those buyers see.

Paid vs organic

A ChatGPT ad and a ChatGPT recommendation are different channels.

If the answer recommends your competitor, your ad sits under that recommendation. Buying ads does not fix it, because OpenAI says ads do not influence answers. Find out what the answer says first; the guide on how to get ChatGPT to recommend your product covers the organic side.

A first test

How to run a first ChatGPT ads test for a SaaS product

  1. 01

Pick one product line and one goal.

Start with Clicks or Conversions, not reach. A B2B test needs signups or demo requests to judge, not impressions.

  2. 02

Write context hints as buyer conversations.

Describe the situation, not single words: "comparing invoicing tools for a 50-person company", "looking for a Mailchimp alternative with better deliverability".

  3. 03

Send clicks to the page that answers the comparison.

A pricing, comparison or alternatives page converts better than a homepage for someone who was just comparing vendors. Add UTM parameters: OpenAI says they persist on ad clicks.

  4. 04

    Keep the landing page reachable.

OpenAI's ad-review crawler, OAI-AdsBot, visits submitted landing pages. A firewall that blocks it can hold up review.

  5. 05

Budget for enough clicks to read the result.

At the suggested $3–$5 starting CPC, 200 clicks cost about $600–$1,000. Fewer clicks than that rarely tell a B2B conversion rate apart from noise.

  6. 06

    Read spend the next day.

OpenAI says spend figures can lag by 7–8 hours, so a zero is not proof that nothing was charged.

Before you spend

Check what ChatGPT already says about your category.

Ask the questions your ad would target, without naming your brand, and see who is recommended. If you are already recommended, an ad mostly reaches people who would have seen you anyway. If a competitor is, an ad is the only placement you have until the answer changes. The free AI visibility check runs one real buyer question and shows who is recommended. RecoProof sells the paid Recommendation Audit that does this across a full question set; it does not sell ads.
