How to Show Up in ChatGPT Search Results, and Why Showing Up Isn't Being Recommended

How to show up in ChatGPT search: allow OAI-SearchBot, get indexed by its search partners and get onto the pages it cites. From OpenAI's docs and our data.

Short answer

How do you show up in ChatGPT search results?

Allow OpenAI's search crawler, OAI-SearchBot, in robots.txt and in your CDN or firewall. Make sure the search providers ChatGPT queries have indexed your important pages. Write pages that answer the short search queries ChatGPT turns a question into. Then get onto the third-party pages it cites most, because in our data they supplied 85% of the sources. OpenAI says placement is not guaranteed, and being shown as a source is not the same as being recommended.

Step 1

Let OAI-SearchBot crawl your site

OpenAI's rule is short: to be eligible for ChatGPT search, allow OAI-SearchBot and make sure your host or CDN accepts traffic from the IP addresses OpenAI publishes for it. After a robots.txt change, OpenAI says its systems take about 24 hours to adjust. OpenAI runs three agents that site owners mix up:

User agentWhat it doesWhat to do
OAI-SearchBotSurfaces sites in ChatGPT search answers.Allow it. Sites that block it are not shown in ChatGPT search answers, though they can still appear as navigational links.
GPTBotCrawls content that may be used to train OpenAI's models.Your choice. It is independent of search: blocking GPTBot does not remove you from ChatGPT search.
ChatGPT-UserVisits a page when a user's request needs it.Not used to decide whether you appear in search. robots.txt rules may not apply because a person triggered the visit.
User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
Allow: /

# Optional: opt out of model training without leaving ChatGPT search
User-agent: GPTBot
Disallow: /

Bot protection is the usual hidden block: a firewall rule or CDN bot setting can refuse OpenAI's crawler even when robots.txt allows it. The free AI crawler checker shows which AI crawlers your robots.txt allows and the rule that decides each one.

Step 2

Get indexed by the search providers ChatGPT uses

OpenAI says ChatGPT search sometimes partners with other search providers and sends them rewritten queries. Its help page points to Microsoft's and Shopify's privacy statements for how those providers handle the queries. OpenAI does not publish a full list, but the Microsoft reference makes one cheap step worth doing: verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools, submit your sitemap, and check that your product, pricing and comparison pages are indexed there. Bing also accepts IndexNow pings, so new pages can be picked up without waiting for a crawl.

Step 3

Answer the query ChatGPT actually searches for

ChatGPT does not search for the buyer's whole question. OpenAI's own example turns a long question about cancer drugs into the query “CCR8 immunotherapy drug development 2025”, then sends narrower follow-up queries. For software, a question such as “what's a good CRM for a 20-person agency that uses HubSpot” is likely to become something close to “best CRM for small agencies HubSpot integration” (our illustration, not an OpenAI example). Pages that win those queries say the category, the segment and the constraint in the title and the first paragraph, and carry a visible date.

  • A page per segment you sell to: “[category] for [segment]”.
  • A pricing page with numbers in the HTML, not only in a calculator.
  • Comparison and alternatives pages for the competitors buyers name.
  • Integration pages for the tools buyers ask about.
Step 4

Get onto the pages that get cited

In our study of 768 citations from 64 answers to software buying questions, vendors' own sites supplied 11% of the sources and third-party pages such as comparison articles and “best X” lists supplied 85%. The OpenAI model with web search drew on only 27 domains across its 32 answers, against 105 for Perplexity Sonar. The pool of pages that gets read is small, so being listed, accurately, on the few that are read matters more than publishing more of your own. The data came through the engines' APIs, which can differ from the ChatGPT app.

The guide on how to get ChatGPT to recommend your product walks through finding those pages and getting onto them.

Step 5

Check whether you show up

  1. Open a Temporary Chat or sign out, so saved memories do not shape the search.
  2. Ask five buyer questions that do not name your brand. Turn on Search if ChatGPT does not search on its own.
  3. Open Sources under each answer. Note whether your domain is there, whether your brand is named, and who is recommended.
  4. Ask each question again on another day. One answer is a sample.

For a repeatable version with a worksheet, follow how to track brand mentions in ChatGPT.

A common question

Does ChatGPT use Bing or Google?

OpenAI does not say that ChatGPT uses Google. Its help page says ChatGPT search “sometimes partners with other search providers” and links Microsoft's privacy statement, which points to Bing, along with Shopify's. OpenAI also runs its own crawler, OAI-SearchBot, to surface sites in ChatGPT search. So the practical answer is: be crawlable by OAI-SearchBot and indexed in Bing, and do not assume a Google ranking carries over. Many SaaS sites rank on Google but miss ChatGPT recommendations.

Showing up vs being recommended

Shown as a source

Your page is linked under the answer.

ChatGPT read your page. It may have used it for one fact, not for the vendor choice.

Mentioned

Your brand is named in the answer.

You are known in this context. You may still be one name in a long list.

Recommended

Your brand is presented as a good fit for the buyer's need.

This is the result that sends buyers. It needs evidence about fit, not only a crawlable page.

If ChatGPT cites you but recommends a competitor, read why ChatGPT recommends your competitor.

What does not help

Three things teams try first that do not make a site eligible.

Publishing llms.txt

No answer engine has committed to reading it, and OpenAI's search documentation does not mention it. It does no harm, but it does not make you eligible.

Allowing only GPTBot

GPTBot is the training crawler. Search eligibility is decided by OAI-SearchBot.

Rewriting pages for "AI keywords"

ChatGPT sends ordinary search queries to its providers. Pages that answer those queries plainly do better than pages stuffed with phrases.
