What a good llms.txt looks like.
Only the H1 title is required. A short blockquote summary comes next, then any plain paragraphs, then H2 sections that list links. A section named Optional holds secondary pages a reader can skip.
Write the summary the way you would want an assistant to describe you: what you sell, who it is for and what you do not do. Specific, checkable facts help more than slogans.

- The file answers HTTP 200 at /llms.txt as plain text, not an HTML page from a catch-all route.

- Up to 10 listed URLs are requested to catch pages that moved or return errors.

llms.txt describes you. It does not get you recommended.
As of September 2026, Google says Search ignores llms.txt, and no other major answer engine has said it uses the file to decide which vendors to recommend. When a buyer asks an assistant for a shortlist, the answer comes from what the model already knows and what it retrieves about you and your competitors.

What is llms.txt?
A Markdown file at /llms.txt that gives AI tools a short, curated index of a site: a title, a one-paragraph summary and lists of the pages that matter, each with a note. It was proposed at llmstxt.org in 2024; version 2 of the format was published in August 2026.
Will an llms.txt get my company recommended by ChatGPT or Perplexity?
There is no evidence that it will. As of September 2026, Google says Google Search ignores llms.txt, and OpenAI, Anthropic and Perplexity have not said their answer engines use other sites' llms.txt files. It is cheap to publish and some agents and developer tools read it, but it is not a ranking or recommendation factor.
Is a missing llms.txt a problem?
No. RecoProof does not treat a missing llms.txt as an SEO or AI visibility defect. Publish one if you want a clean, controlled summary of your key pages for tools that read it.
What is the difference between llms.txt and llms-full.txt?
llms.txt is an index of links. llms-full.txt is an informal companion that some sites publish with the full text of their documentation in one file. The llmstxt.org format does not define llms-full.txt.
Where do I put the file?
At the root of your domain, for example https://example.com/llms.txt, served as text/plain or text/markdown. Version 2 of the format also lets a file cover a subpath, such as /docs/llms.txt for documentation, with the most specific file applying.
How does the generator choose pages?
It reads the links on your homepage and the URLs in your sitemap, keeps pages that describe your product, pricing, use cases, customers, comparisons, docs and company, and skips login, legal, tag and pagination pages. Titles and notes come from link text and each page's own title and meta description. Review the draft before publishing it.
