Answer engine

Also known as: AI answer engine, generative engine

Definition

An answer engine is a system that responds to a question with a written answer, often generated by a language model from retrieved sources, instead of returning only a ranked list of links.

What it means

ChatGPT with search, Perplexity, Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, Microsoft Copilot and Gemini all work as answer engines. Most combine a language model with retrieval: they search an index or the live web, select passages and write an answer that may cite the pages it used.

Perplexity describes itself as an answer engine. The term is broader than any one product and also covers assistants that answer only from what the model learned in training, without retrieving anything.

Why it matters

An answer engine compresses the research step. A buyer who once opened ten tabs may now read one answer naming three vendors. Whether your brand is among them depends on what the engine retrieves and how the model weighs it.

Example

A marketing operations lead asks Perplexity which email marketing platforms suit a team that needs strict approval workflows. The answer names three vendors and cites two review sites and one vendor's documentation page. The vendor with the documentation page has earned both a mention and a citation.

Common misunderstandings

  • An answer engine is not a search engine with a new interface: the answer can leave out pages that rank well.
  • Answers are not fixed. Asking the same question again can change the vendors named.
  • The sources shown with an answer are not a complete record of everything the engine retrieved.
