Zero-click search

Also known as: zero-click result, no-click search

Definition

A zero-click search is a search that ends without the user clicking through to any website, because the results page or an AI answer already satisfied the question.

What it means

Zero-click behaviour predates generative AI: featured snippets, knowledge panels and instant answers already resolved many questions on the results page. AI Overviews, AI Mode and assistants such as ChatGPT extend the pattern by summarising several sources in one answer.

For a brand, a zero-click search is not necessarily a lost opportunity. The buyer still reads what the answer says about the category and the vendors in it; the website visit simply comes later, through another route, or not at all.

Why it matters

When research happens inside the answer, traffic stops being a reliable proxy for influence. A B2B team that tracks only clicks can miss that buyers formed a shortlist without visiting, which is why AI visibility is measured on the answers themselves.

Example

A finance lead asks how two expense management tools differ, reads the AI summary and books a demo with one vendor by typing its name into the browser. Analytics records a direct visit; the answer that shaped the choice leaves no referral trace.

Common misunderstandings

  • Zero-click does not mean zero value; being named and described well in the answer still matters.
  • A fall in organic clicks is not proof that AI answers alone caused it; rankings, seasonality and demand also move clicks.
  • Published estimates of the zero-click share vary widely with method, so treat any single figure with care.
