AI Overviews

Also known as: Google AI Overviews, AIO

Definition

AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries that Google Search shows in its results for some queries, with links to supporting pages on the web.

What it means

Google shows an AI Overview when its systems determine that generative AI can be especially helpful, for example for complex questions where information from a range of pages helps. The overview summarises the topic and links to supporting pages, which are not necessarily the top organic results.

Google's documentation says there are no extra requirements to appear as a supporting link: the page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet. Site owners use the usual Search controls, such as robots.txt rules for Googlebot, noindex, nosnippet and max-snippet. Google-Extended does not affect AI Overviews.

Why it matters

AI Overviews sit on the results page buyers use most, so they shape which vendors a buyer reads about first, sometimes without a click. Google counts traffic from AI features within the Web search type in Search Console rather than reporting it separately.

Example

For 'how to choose a SOC 2 compliance platform', an AI Overview lists evaluation criteria and links to two vendor guides and an analyst blog. A vendor ranking fifth organically is linked in the overview; the vendor ranking second is not.

Common misunderstandings

  • No special markup, file or schema places a page in an AI Overview; Google says none is needed.
  • Blocking Google-Extended does not remove a site from AI Overviews; Googlebot rules govern Search.
  • A link in an AI Overview is a citation, not an endorsement or a recommendation.
