AI Mode

Also known as: Google AI Mode

Definition

AI Mode is a conversational search experience in Google Search that answers a question with an AI-generated response, lets the searcher ask follow-up questions and links to pages across the web.

What it means

Google describes AI Mode as particularly helpful for questions that need further exploration, reasoning or comparison. Like AI Overviews, it uses a query fan-out technique: it breaks a question into subtopics, issues many related searches at once and brings the results together in one response.

Because of fan-out, the pages AI Mode draws on can come from searches the user never typed. Site owners manage their content with the same controls as the rest of Google Search, such as robots.txt rules for Googlebot and snippet controls.

Why it matters

Comparison questions are where B2B shortlists form, and AI Mode is built for them. A vendor that is visible only for its own brand name may be missing from the fan-out searches that decide which products a comparison answer includes.

Example

A buyer asks AI Mode to compare data warehouse options for a small analytics team on a tight budget, then asks a follow-up about pricing models. The response draws on pricing pages, documentation and independent comparisons. A vendor whose pricing page hides its model behind a sales form gives the answer little to cite.

Common misunderstandings

  • AI Mode is not the same as AI Overviews: it is a separate, conversational experience, even though both use query fan-out.
  • Ranking for the exact question typed is not enough; fan-out searches cover subtopics too.
  • Follow-up questions change the context, so a single-question test does not show the whole journey.
